Our School Ambassadors Pilot aims to inspire the next generation of veterinary nurses and deliver careers advice and information about veterinary nursing to school age children.

Launched in November 2019 as part of our VN Futures Project Report, the pilot addresses the need for highlighting and supporting pathways into the veterinary nursing profession.

As part of the pilot, a group of VN Ambassadors will be going into schools to talk to school children about veterinary nursing – timed for when they are starting to think about which career they may wish to pursue following secondary education.

In addition to providing career advice, the ambassadors will work in partnership with VN Futures, and with the support and guidance of STEM Learning, to develop effective materials and resources for delivering career information to school-aged children. The aim is that learnings from the pilot, and materials that are developed will then become available to other VNs who are interested in becoming school ambassadors, so that they too can deliver information on VN careers, and support pathways into veterinary nursing.

Currently, three key resource approaches will be developed to include:

  • Highlighting the role of the veterinary nurse in a range of clinical scenarios
  • ‘A day in the life of a Veterinary Nurse’
  • The Veterinary Nurse Roadmap – which will include training options, different roles in veterinary nursing, and career development opportunities
